Morro de São Paulo Travel Tips
Everything you need to know before stepping on the island.
What Nobody Tells You Before Going
Morro de São Paulo is paradise — but it has rules. No cars, no reliable ATMs, weak cell signal, restaurants close early. If you come prepared, everything flows. If not, you'll waste time and money solving things you could have anticipated.
The Essentials
What to Pack
- SPF 50+ sunscreen (lots of it)
- Insect repellent (mosquitoes at night)
- Light clothes — shorts, t-shirts, dresses
- Flip-flops/sandals (streets are sand)
- Dry bag for boat tours
- Phone flashlight (dark streets)
- Cash in reais
Weather
- Year-round average: 25-30°C (77-86°F)
- Oct-Mar: hot sun, calm sea, best season
- Apr-Jun: tropical rain (heavy but brief), low prices
- Jul: winter school break, windy, cooler nights
- Aug-Sep: windiest months, sea can be rough
Tides
- Natural pools appear at low tide only
- Check tide charts before going to Third Beach
- Best conditions: tide below 0.4m
- Low-tide mornings = best snorkeling photos
- Volta à Ilha tour depends on tide too
Practical Tips
Money
Bring reais in cash. The island ATM is unreliable. PIX works everywhere if you have a compatible app (like Wise). International credit cards work at restaurants and guesthouses. Beach bars = cash only.
Cell Signal
Vivo and Claro have the best coverage. Reasonable in the Village and Second Beach, weak beyond Third. Download Google Maps offline before leaving Salvador. Guesthouse Wi-Fi is your friend.
Sun Protection
This is serious — you're 13° from the Equator. SPF 50+, reapply every 2 hours, wear a hat for long walks. Severe sunburn is the #1 tourist mistake on the island.
Hydration
Drink lots of water. Carry a bottle always. There are no shops between Third and Fifth Beach. Boat tours under the sun dehydrate fast. Buy water at Village minimarts (cheapest).
Common Tourist Mistakes
Arriving without reais and depending on the unreliable ATM
Skipping motion sickness medication before the catamaran on rough days
Booking a front-row room at Second Beach without knowing the noise goes until 3am
Going to Third Beach at high tide and finding no natural pools
Not bringing enough sunscreen — it runs out fast and costs more on the island
Scheduling the return flight the same day as the return catamaran
Walking to Fourth Beach without water or sunscreen
Trying to have dinner at 11pm — kitchens close by 10pm
